چکیده

We present a borehole failure model which is based on fracture mechanics and layer buckling theories and compare its prediction with experimental data. The model assumes that the main mechanism of borehole collapse takes place in the form of layers buckling near the borehole surface. The model introduces a combination of fracture mechanics parameters with dimension of length that scale the size of the holes allowing for size effect to be predicted. We present and compare the model predictions with available experimental data. For the model predictions as well for the experimental data we found a strong correlation between the borehole failure load normalized by the uniaxial compressive strength and the hole size normalized by the square of the division of rock fracture toughness over its tensile strength. The model can be used for constructing practical mechanical models for predicting failure and avoiding sanding from small size holes such as perforations.

Application of Halpin-Tsai Method in Modelling and Size-dependent Vibration Analysis of CNTs/fiber/polymer Composite Microplates.

In the present study, modelling and vibration analysis of Carbon nanotubes/ fiber/ polymer composite microplates are investigated. The governing equations of the Carbon nanotubes/ fiber/ polymer composite microplates are derived based on first order shear deformation plate theory, rather than other plate theories, due to accuracy and simplicity of polynomial functions. The modified couple stres...

Optimized Tree-Type Cylindrical-Shaped Nanoporous Filtering Membranes with 6 or 7 Branch Pores in each Pore Tree

The performances of the optimized tree-type cylindrical-shaped nanoporous fltering membranes with six or seven branch pores in each pore tree are analytically studied. The radius Rb,1 of the branch pore for fltration is normally on the 1 or 10 nm scales. The larger trunk pore is for ...

Scaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters

We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...

Predicting the Grouting Ability of Sandy Soils by Artificial Neural Networks Based On Experimental Tests

In this paper, the grouting ability of sandy soils is investigated by artificial neural networks based on the results of chemical grout injection tests. In order to evaluate the soil grouting potential, experimental samples were prepared and then injected. The sand samples with three different particle sizes (medium, fine, and silty) and three relative densities (%30, %50, and %90) were injecte...

Design of a slimline directional borehole radar antenna using FDTD

It is difficult to build directional antennas for borehole radar due to the limited space available in the borehole. Recently published results show, however, that it is possible to obtain directional information even from electrically small antennas. In this paper, we use Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) modelling to optimise the design of a four-element directional antenna array, so that ...
